Exciting things to discover in Kew Gardens

The Iconic Temperate House of Endangered Species

The Temperate House is an iconic landmark in Kew, home to 1,500 species of plants from Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific Islands. Following a five-year renovation process, it re-opened in 2018 to showcase the splendour of the world’s temperate zones. It is filled with 10,000 individual plants, which may help us find solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues, such as climate change, loss of biodiversity or food security. It is an iconic landmark and a beacon of the future for plant science.

Mindful Experience in Japanese Landscape

Kew Gardens in London is home to a magical Japanese landscape that transports visitors to the Far East. Located within the grounds of the world’s largest collection of living plants, this serene area is filled with bonsai trees, traditional pagoda lanterns and meandering pathways.

The Japanese Landscape at Kew Gardens is a delicately manicured landscape designed to complement the Chokushi-Mon (Japanese Gateway). It consists of a Garden of Peace, a Garden of Activity and a Garden of Harmony. The Garden of Peace is reminiscent of a traditional Japanese tea garden, while the Garden of Activity symbolises elements of the natural world. The Garden of Harmony unites the two landscapes, with stones and rock outcrops interplanted with shrubs. The landscape was designed by Professor Fukuhara of Osaka University and laid out in 1996 following restoration of the Japanese Gateway.

The Unparalleled Rhododendron Dell

Sir Joseph Hooker brought back new specimens of rhododendron from his travels to the Himalaya in the mid-19th century. He described the beauty of the flowers as “marvelous”, with 10 kinds on the hill. Today, 150 years later, dense clusters of rhododendrons flower in the dell, including unique hybrids not found elsewhere in the world. Woodchip paths wind around examples such as the pink-flowered Rhododendron kotschyi and Kew’s oldest type, R. campanulatum.
